This post will guide you through understanding your consumer rights, identifying potential scams, and using effective resources to protect yourself and others.

Understanding Your Consumer Rights

Knowing your rights as a consumer is the first line of defense against fraud. Veterans are often targeted by scammers due to their reliable pensions and benefits, making them attractive targets. Familiarize yourself with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which governs how your credit information is used, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s guidelines that help protect against unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts and practices.

Recognizing Scams Targeting Veterans

Scams can come in many forms, from phishing emails and fraudulent investment schemes to fake charitable donations requests. Here are some common tactics used against Veterans:

  • Benefits Buyout Offers: Scammers may offer quick cash in exchange for signing away future benefits.
  • Fake Employment Scams: Job offers that require payment upfront for training or background checks.
  • Imposter Scams: Calls or messages from someone pretending to be a government official, claiming that you need to verify personal information or make a payment.

BBB Scam Tracker℠: A Tool for Awareness and Prevention

The BBB Scam Tracker℠ is an invaluable resource for both preventing and reporting scams. Here’s how it can help:

  • Report and Warn Others: By reporting a scam, you help warn others of potential fraud. Your reports contribute to a database that others can consult to check if they're facing a similar scam.
  • Research Suspicious Offers: Before you commit to any offer or purchase, use the Scam Tracker to research by URL, email, or phone number to see if others have reported something similar.
  • Learn from Others’ Experiences: The tracker provides access to reports from others who have encountered scams, offering insights and warnings about the latest tactics.

In 2023 alone, BBB Scam Tracker℠ helped save approximately $24.3 million by enabling people to avoid falling prey to scams.

Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP)

The Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP), is a program that the VA established through a partnership with the Association of Military Banks of America (AMBA). Veterans, beneficiaries, and caregivers can use VBBP to open an account at a VBBP-participating financial institution and enroll in direct deposit. Over 100 financial institutions participate in the program.

Key features of the VBBP include:

  • Direct Deposit Services: Facilitates secure direct deposit options for Veterans to receive their benefits, minimizing risks associated with paper checks.
  • Financial Education: Provides educational resources to help Veterans understand their financial options, recognize potential scams, and make informed banking decisions.
  • Customized Financial Products: Offers financial products specially designed for Veterans, such as accounts with no minimum balance requirements and fee waivers.

Taking Action: Reporting and Recovery

If you suspect that you’ve been targeted by a scam:

  1. Report It: Use resources like BBB Scam Tracker℠ and contact your bank if financial information was compromised.
  2. Notify Authorities: Report to local law enforcement and to the Federal Trade Commission.
  3. Educate Yourself and Others: Share your experiences in Veteran communities to prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
